Broadwater County lies along the upper Missouri River valley in Central Montana, framed by the rugged Big Belt Mountains to the east and the Elkhorn Mountains to the west. Internationally renowned for the ultra-rich placer gold strikes of Confederate Gulch and Diamond City, this region produced some of the highest-grade placer gravels ever recorded in North America. Hydrothermal solutions injected gold-bearing pyritic quartz veins and silver-lead replacement deposits into faulted limestones and schists around Radersburg, Park, and Winston. Severe erosion weathered these hard-rock lodes, washing massive amounts of coarse placer gold and heavy nuggets into Confederate Gulch, Montana Gulch, and White's Gulch. Rockhounds also target public domain slopes for quartz crystal vugs, jasper, chalcedony, and secondary copper minerals.
